How It Works

How Many Pages Is a 10-Hour Audiobook? The Plain Conversion

A 10-hour audiobook is roughly 250 to 320 trade paperback pages. See the math, six named books by pages per hour, and the time at 1.25x, 1.5x and 2x.

A 10-hour audiobook is roughly 250 to 320 pages of an ordinary trade paperback, which works out to about 25 to 32 pages per audio hour. It is an estimate, and it moves with the edition you hold and the narrator you hear.

The arithmetic is one line: words per minute x 60 / words per page = pages per hour. The rest of this page fills in each number, shows six real books worked through it, and gives you the same sum for playback speed, so you can check any listing yourself.

The narration side: words per minute

Published guidance on narration speed clusters around 150 words a minute. A narration guide for audiobook narrators puts it at about 150 words a minute, or 9,000 words an hour. PromptVO gives about 130 to 160 words per minute, and says it runs faster in dialogue and climactic scenes and slower in dense description.

The audiobook length calculators use the same neighbourhood. Audibloom uses 155 words per minute for fiction and 140 to 155 for nonfiction. So, for planning, 130 to 160 words per minute is a fair range, with 150 to 155 as the common middle.

The print side: words per page

A printed page holds fewer words than people expect from a typed manuscript page, and it varies a lot. Adjusting Studio and Buk Press give these working ranges:

  • A trade paperback, about 6 by 9 inches: roughly 300 to 350 words per page.
  • Ordinary trade and hardcover fiction taken together: roughly 250 to 400 words per page.
  • Nonfiction with subheads and pull quotes: roughly 200 to 300 words per page.
  • Large print: only about 150 words per page, per Adjusting Studio.

Trim size, font, margins, chapter openings and front matter all move the page count. So, the conversion describes an amount of text, not the page count of one particular edition.

Words per page vary with the edition's type and layout, so pages are a rough unit.

Putting the two together

Here is the formula with real numbers in it.

  • At the 150 words per minute midpoint and 300 to 350 words per page: 150 x 60 / 350 is about 25.7 pages an hour, and 150 x 60 / 300 is 30 pages an hour.
  • Across the trade paperback range, 130 x 60 / 350 is about 22 pages an hour at the slow end, and 160 x 60 / 300 is 32 at the fast end.
  • Stretched to the widest envelope, 130 x 60 / 400 is about 19.5, and 160 x 60 / 250 is about 38.

That gives a broad envelope of roughly 20 to 38 pages per audio hour. A 10-hour audiobook therefore spans about 195 to 384 pages across formats, about 223 to 320 in a trade paperback, and around 257 to 300 at the midpoint. If you want one planning number, 25 to 32 pages an hour is the sensible band for an ordinary paperback.

Six books, worked from the publisher's own numbers

These sums use the print page count and the audiobook runtime that the publisher lists, divided out. The runtimes were read from the Penguin Random House pages on 1 October 2026. Each line is one print edition set against one recording, so none of it says anything about how any narrator sounds.

  • Educated by Tara Westover, Random House paperback, 2022, 368 pages. Audiobook 12 hours 10 minutes. 368 / 12.17 is 30.2 pages per hour.
  • Becoming by Michelle Obama, Crown paperback, 2021, 464 pages. Audiobook 19 hours 4 minutes. 464 / 19.07 is 24.3 pages per hour.
  • Becoming Us by Robin Jones Gunn, Multnomah paperback, 2019, 320 pages. Audiobook 8 hours 11 minutes. 320 / 8.18 is 39.1 pages per hour.
  • Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert, Penguin Classics paperback, 2011, 384 pages. Audiobook 13 hours 45 minutes. 384 / 13.75 is 27.9 pages per hour.
  • A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier, Penguin Books paperback, 2020, 336 pages. Audiobook 10 hours 52 minutes. 336 / 10.87 is 30.9 pages per hour.
  • Rocket Men by Robert Kurson, Random House Trade Paperbacks paperback, 2019, 384 pages. Audiobook 12 hours 20 minutes. 384 / 12.33 is 31.1 pages per hour.

Four of the six land between 28 and 31, inside the 25 to 32 band. Becoming sits lower at about 24, and Becoming Us higher at about 39. Those are comparisons between specific editions and recordings, not properties of the books themselves.

Why a book lands high or low

A few things pull a book away from the middle, and each one is a clause worth knowing before you convert a listing.

Dialogue moves faster than dense description, which PromptVO notes in its speaking-rate figures. Large print and different trim sizes change the page count without changing the words, and Adjusting Studio's 150 words a page for large print shows how far that can go. Introductions, notes and appendices can sit in the print count and be handled differently in the recording; the Penguin Audio listing for Madame Bovary carries Lydia Davis's translation and notes, which is a named example of an edition with extra material around the text. And narrators differ, at roughly 130 to 170 words per minute according to AudiobookRuntime.

A high pages-per-hour figure in the list above should be read as a fact about one edition and one recording. It is not a label for a narrator.

Playback speed: runtime divided by speed

Playback speed changes your elapsed time, not the length of the recording. The sum is runtime / speed.

For a 10-hour audiobook:

  • At 1.25x it takes 8 hours.
  • At 1.5x it takes 6 hours 40 minutes.
  • At 2x it takes 5 hours.

The same sum works for the part you have left. Four hours of recorded audio remaining takes:

  • 3 hours 12 minutes at 1.25x.
  • 2 hours 40 minutes at 1.5x.
  • 2 hours at 2x.

Audible's help page on setting narration speed says you can set the speed for an individual title and have it saved across apps. Libby's help on listening to audiobooks describes a player with a timeline and a speed control. When a store or app shows remaining time, check whether the number is recorded time or adjusted time. If it is recorded time, divide it by your speed when you plan a session.

Playback speed divides the runtime, so a faster setting shortens the listen directly.

Turning pages into hours

The reverse question is the practical one: how long will this paperback take to hear? At normal speed, with 25 to 32 pages an hour:

  • A 200-page book is about 6 to 8 hours.
  • A 300-page paperback is roughly 9 to 12 hours.
  • A 400-page book is about 12 to 16 hours.

Calculators do the same thing with words instead of pages. CalculAwesome divides the word count by a narration rate; at 155 words per minute it turns a 90,000-word book into about 9.7 hours. AudiobookRuntime uses 9,000 words per finished hour and gives 10 hours for the same 90,000 words.

So, if a listing shows a word count, use it. A word count is a better guide than a page count, because it does not depend on font, margins or trim size.

The two routes meet in the middle, which is a useful check on any figure. Take that same 90,000-word book and divide it by 300 to 350 words per page: you get about 257 to 300 printed pages. Divide 90,000 words by 9,000 words an hour and you get 10 hours. Ten hours for about 257 to 300 pages is the same 25 to 32 pages an hour this page started with, reached from the other direction.

If the page count and the runtime you are looking at disagree wildly with that band, the cause is usually one of the edition effects above, such as large print, extra notes, or a recording that carries different material than the book.

Quick answers

How many hours is a 300-page audiobook? Roughly 9 to 12 hours at normal speed, using 25 to 32 pages per audio hour. A paperback with generous margins or large type will have fewer words in those 300 pages and run shorter.

How long would a 200-page audiobook be? About 6 to 8 hours at normal speed. Check the print edition first, since a 200-page book in large print holds far fewer words than a 200-page trade paperback.

How many pages is 1 hour of audiobook? About 25 to 32 pages of a trade paperback, with a wider envelope of roughly 20 to 38 pages across formats. The figure comes from words per minute x 60 / words per page, so it shifts when either side shifts.

How long is a 10-hour audiobook at 1.5 speed? 6 hours 40 minutes. Divide the 10 hours by 1.5.

Before you buy or borrow

Take the listed hours, pick the playback speed you actually use, and divide. If the listing gives a word count, run that through 150 to 155 words per minute as well and see whether the two answers agree.

For a real runtime to set beside these numbers, see the page on the length of the 11/22/63 audiobook.
