I have heard two of her recordings all the way through. Here is what they tell you about whether she suits you, and where to start.

Start with Great Big Beautiful Life if you want to know whether Julia Whelan suits you. She reads it alone, and the long historical strand gives her two very different women to play. I have finished two of her recordings, and everything below about how she sounds comes from those two.

She has recorded a great many audiobooks, more than 700 by her own site's count. These are the two I know.

## The two I have heard

Two, both finished, both in the last stretch.

**Great Big Beautiful Life**, Emily Henry, Penguin Audio, just over twelve hours. **Heard, full.** She reads the whole thing solo, which surprised me, because the book alternates between a contemporary romance and an elderly woman's recorded interviews about a century of family scandal. That is two registers and one performer.

**Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil**, V. E. Schwab, Macmillan Audio, 18 hours 26 minutes. **Heard, full.** This one is not solo. Whelan reads one of three strands, alongside Katie Leung and Marisa Calin, with each performer taking one woman.

I scored both narrations 4.5, but the same number is doing different work: one is an ensemble credit and one is a whole book carried alone.

## What the two of them tell you

**She is at her best with age and retrospect.** In Great Big Beautiful Life the strongest thing in the recording is Margaret Ives, an eighty-something woman talking into a tape recorder about a family that destroyed itself in public. Whelan carries her completely. She also plays the young, sunny, present-day narrator in the same book, and the older voice is the one that stayed with me.

**She holds a long structure without signposting it.** Both books move between timelines. In print each of them tells you where you are with a heading before you read a word. In audio you get a voice, and in both recordings I never lost my footing. On the Schwab that work is shared with two other performers. On the Henry it is hers alone, which is the harder version of the job.

**Range is the open question.** She also reads thrillers, memoir and a great deal else, and I have heard her only in novels. If you want her in another register, play the first fifteen minutes of the sample before you spend a credit.

## Start here

If you are choosing a first Julia Whelan listen and you want the most of her in one place, **Great Big Beautiful Life**. Solo reading, twelve hours, and the material she is best in occupies a large share of it.

If you would rather hear how she works inside an ensemble, **Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil**, with the caveat that it is a long, deliberately slow gothic novel and the pacing is not for everyone.

If neither book appeals, do not force it. A narrator is not a reason to spend eighteen hours in a genre you dislike, and the whole point of listening by narrator is that it should widen what you enjoy rather than narrow it.

## One more of her recordings

**Listed, credit verified.** The credit was checked; I have not heard it, so this is a pointer, not a recommendation.

- **Educated**, Tara Westover. She won the 2019 Audie Award for Best Female Narrator for this recording, per the Audio Publishers Association's own winners announcement.

## Her awards and other work

The 2019 Audie for Best Female Narrator, for Educated. AudioFile named her a Golden Voice in 2020, which is that publication's lifetime-achievement designation. Great Big Beautiful Life won an AudioFile Earphones Award in 2025 and was a finalist for the 2026 Audie in Romance, which it did not win. She is also a novelist, of My Oxford Year and Thank You for Listening among others, and she founded the audio imprint Audiobrary. Her own biography lists a Grammy nomination, as an audiobook director.

## Common questions

**Which Julia Whelan audiobook should I start with?** Great Big Beautiful Life. She reads all of it alone, it runs just over twelve hours, and the eighty-something Margaret Ives is the best thing in it.

**Does a credit here mean you recommend it?** No. **Heard, full** means I finished the recording and the observations are first-hand. **Listed, credit verified** means the credit was checked and nothing more: no quality claim, no fit claim, no recommendation.

**Is she a good starting point for audiobooks generally?** For fiction, on the evidence of two novels, yes. She is clear, she does not oversell, and she holds a long book together.

## Before you buy

Editions vary by market and by year, and a narrator credit that is right on one edition can be wrong on another. Check her name on the listing before you spend a credit. If you spot a credit here that is wrong, [tell me](https://calsbestfinds.com/contact/).
